Orthodontics

The Dental specialty for the prevention and correction of dental and oral anomalies.

Orthodontics as defined by the American Association of Orthodontics is, "The area of dentistry concerned with the supervision, guidance and correction of the growing and mature dentofacial structures, including those conditions that require movement of teeth or correction of malrelationships between and among teeth and facial bones by the application of forces and/or the stimulation and redirection of the jaws within the craniofacial complex." It specializes in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. The technical term for these problems is "malocclusion," which means "bad bite."

metal braces For the most part, most people think 'braces' are for cosmetic purposes only, which is not always the case.

Often times there can be a more serious underlying condition other than just concerns for ones appearance.

There are several types of braces. The most well know are metal and clear. Metal braces are the most widely used type of braces. They are very strong and can withstand most types of treatment. Unlike the metal braces of the past, today’s metal braces are small, more comfortable and more attractive.

Ceramic braces or clear braces are made of composite material. They are more often chosen by adult patients because they “blend in” with your teeth. Common drawbacks with the clear braces have to do with the ligatures (tiny rubber bands) that hold the arch wire to the brackets. These tend to stain between visits to your orthodontist.
