Dental Insurance Benefits and Alternatives

Dental Insurance is extremely important for both families and individuals and can prove to be financially beneficial in reducing the costs of dental care.

There is a difference between dental insurance and dental discount plans. Dental insurance is typically only available to individuals and families who receive their dental insurance coverage through large groups or through their employers.

For many there is no available dental option through their place of employment and may find it necessary to seek out dental insurance plan alternatives such as dental discount programs.

Dental coverage can provide basic coverage for exams, hygiene cleanings, root canals, orthodontics etc, and depending on the insurance plan the maximum yearly spending limits can dramatically differ.

Dental coverage often times is included with medical savings or 'health discount' plans. Often times these supplemental benefits offered by these discount plans (vision, dental, pharmacy, etc), make these plans appealing to many who are not looking for full health coverage, but who wish cover additional expenses they are planning in these specific categories. As with any type of health coverage the choice is often difficult due to the number of alternatives available to the consumer. It is important to understand the Dental Coverage Options available and what benefits they will provide.

The important thing as always is to evaluate cost of coverage vs. projected expenses. If there are 3 family members and good oral hygiene is maintained with yearly visits to the dentist, then perhaps the cost of having a dental plan out weighs the expense of the yearly visit. If there is a history of dental conditions, root canals, concerns about progressing gum disease, or a need for dental appliances, then serious thought should be given to obtaining some form of dental coverage.
